Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been out for months now, the DS Lite is finally here, and yet the PlayStation 2 and the PSP are the current best-selling console and handheld systems in America. This is something that Sony was very quick to point out in a press release today. According to NPD, nearly 232,000 PlayStation 2 consoles were sold this May and 160,000 PSPs were sold. In comparison, 221,000 Xbox 360s and 146,000 Nintendo DS handhelds were sold in the same period.
On the software side, it's a different story. PS2 software sales for May hit 3.5 million units, nearly tripling Xbox software sales of 1.2 million units. Nintendo's GameCube sold about 1 million units, and the Xbox 360 comes in at only 853,000. We'll see how much these numbers change as more AAA titles come out for the Xbox 360 in the coming months. Maybe one day we'll see a similar press release from Microsoft about Xbox 360 sales. ' '
